When to Apply:

Seed is best applied in fall (for cool season grass) and spring (for warm season grass). Prior to seeding, consider aerating and dethatching to prepare the ground. Mow low in order to give seed the best chance of seed to soil contact.

How to Apply:

  1. Aerate or dethatch to prepare the ground for seeding and to increase seed-to-soil contact.

  2. Apply seed using a hand spreader, focusing on bare and patchy areas.

  3. Keep soil moist for 1-2 weeks after seeding, or until germination. Daily light watering is preferred to a heavy soaking for this process.

  4. Keep traffic off the lawn as best you can until the seeds begin to fill in and germinate.

  5. Consider a starter fertilizer after seeding to give seedlings the nutrients they need to grow.

Tips:

  • Keep as much traffic off your lawn while seeds are growing, as it gives seeds the best chance of growing strong roots.

  • For cool season grasses, fall is the best time to seed. It provides the best opportunity for roots to take hold and grow deeply, and there is less competition for weeds.

  • After seeding, keep soil moist with light daily watering for 1-2 weeks.

FAQs:

What is North Star Seed and why is it premium?

Lawnbright searched for the newest in seed technology when we developed our proprietary North Star Seed. Look for the blue label to see that North Star Seed has 0% weed seed or fillers (which are often found in contractor or bargain bags of seed) and is NTEP-rated with a high germination rate. Our seed also spreads laterally, which means it will fill in bare spots as it grows. Finally, Lawnbright North Star Seed is heat and drought resistant, growing deep roots that allow you to have a healthier lawn with less maintenance in the long-term.

Does North Star work with my grass type?

The seed you should use largely depends on your grass type, which you can find here. North Star is designed for cool season grasses, which typically overseed in the fall.

How much seed do I need for my lawn?

Getting the amount of seed right depends largely on your rate of seeding, amount of bare patches, and overall goals. Generally we say you’ll need about 8 lbs per 1,000 sq ft. if you’re seeding bare ground, and 4 lbs per 1,000 sq ft. if you’re overseeding. But, your mileage may vary depending on your rate of seeding. Excess seed can be saved for next season.
